![]() 2003 - Koh Sa Mui, Thailand 27 July 2003 - 01 August 2003 Bo Phut Each morning, after breakfast, we would walk along the two kilometer beach towards Bo Phut (pronounced "Boe Poo"), originally inhabited by local fisherman and known as the sleepy Fisherman's Village. One of the oldest villages on Samui, Bo Phut's tiny stretch of the north shore of Samui offers a quiet sense of old-world charm and peaceful solitude nowhere to be found on nearby Chaweng Beach. A dozen high quality restaurants, bistros, and small bars dot this village's single, one lane waterfront road, interspersed with wooden Chinese shop houses, giving the place the look of a movie set for some Asian adventure film. Visiting sailboats, Chinese junks, classic Thai longtails, and wildly painted fishing boats dot the bay. Separated from the main ring road which circles the island, the Fisherman's Village is where the crazy pace of Samui's traffic slows to a walk, where street vendors, chic cafes, smiling old ladies, sleepy cats (pictured below) scuba tours and inter-island travellers disembarking on a rickety wooden pier all come together. This part of the island is an ideal location for anyone looking for a bit of beachside serenity and good clean fun. During one of our daily strolls, we noticed an eerie, alien-like howling sound which broke the peaceful morning silence. After some sleuthing, we came across the origin of the mysterious sound: two cats (pictured below), positioned in tense, fighting positions, howling at each other. Paul snapped a quick picture of the cat stand-off (neither cats seemed to notice) and we were soon on our way, continuing our explorations of this otherwise peaceful island paradise.
